{local love} a peak a week

it all started when i read this article about the 5-peak boulder traverse.  i thought to myself, yes of course! we should do this! and sent it to my friend and hiking buddy extraordinaire, K.  we hike a lot, we're in good shape, et cetera et cetera, so why not?

we found out why not on the day we decided to celebrate K's birthday by hiking to the summit of bear mountain, the second tallest of the five boulder peaks.  granted, we didn't really bring adequate food to fuel a seven-mile five-hour adventure, but regardless, at the end of the day we were pretty well spent.

that didn't stop us though -- if we couldn't do all five in one day, we could certainly do them all in five weeks!  and so #apeakaweek was born.  and it was pretty epic.  spectacular views, fantastic company, lots of sweat and lots of bear poo, a twisted ankle or two... totally worth it!

{weekender} pitkin / happy birthday charley!

we're in pitkin this weekend, celebrating life (as usual), but also celebrating my father-in-law's 60th birthday.  we started the day with a nice long hike to lower lamphier lake, and we spent the evening grilling and campfiring with family and friends from all over town.  charley is an incredible human being and i am one hundred percent blessed to be a part of his family!

{party animals} born to run: a baby shower

what an incredible honor it was to throw this baby shower brunch for two of the most amazing people i know!  J is a beautiful and generous yogi, and her husband E is kind and funny and an ultra runner to boot.  these two were made for each other, and i simply can't wait to meet their soon-to-arrive little man, appropriately named miles :)

{local love} our first fourteener!

in honor of colorado's 138th birthday this weekend, A and i set out to hike our very first fourteener!  we woke up bright and early and drove to mount evans. we parked at summit lake (at an elevation of 12,830 feet) and made our way to the northeast face of the mountain, which was the shorter (and much steeper) way to the top.  it took us about an hour and a half to climb the 1.75 miles and 1430ish vertical feet to the summit, but the view from 14,264 feet was pretty amazing!
we ate lunch at the top and headed down the mountain the longer, more scenic way.  all told, it was about a four-hour hike, with very little air, and probably not enough water, but it was such an incredible adventure -- so many people never get to have an experience like this, and here it is in our own back yard!

{party animals} a ghost town gatsby wedding

remember this post from last year?  well the big day was saturday, and it was perfect!  the kind of perfect, mind you, that involves cold rain and a power outage, but also the kind of perfect that involves friends and family coming together to celebrate the making of a beautiful new family.

{exciting news} meet kona!

our family grew by four feet today!  it was snowy and gross outside, so we went to a puppy adoption event (because that's normal, right?)... we definitely didn't think we were going to make the jump, but we just fell in love with this little lady (i mean, look at those eyes!). she's about four months old, a little rescue mutt with some australian kelpie in her, and i think we're going to call her kona. we're over the moon... the cats? less so...
