we woke up early on day six and made our way to termini station to catch the train to pompeii. the journey took us first to naples, where we caught a rickety old commuter train through some slightly sketchy-looking neighborhoods. along the way we met a friendly neapolitan artist who wanted to practice his english; he asked us lots of questions and informed us that he was headed to sorrento to paint. before we knew it we had arrived at pompeii.
we spent five hours walking the ancient streets of pompeii, exploring every last inch of the ruined city. we saw frescoes and villas, temples and brothels, and casts of bodies perfectly preserved in volcanic ash. we loved on the sweet stray dogs that live in the city and wished we could take them home with us. when our feet threatened mutiny, we caught the train back to the city.
dinner was gross train station pizza in naples, but we were too tired to care. the ride home was long; we made it back to the hotel just in time for our visit from the crazy boom box lady. when she was finally gone we fell asleep fast and hard.
