friday was another lazy day. we woke up and went straight to the pool. we napped. we went to the king's shops for lunch and shopping, then to the queen's marketplace for groceries. we napped again.
then we hopped in the car and drove from sea level to 9200 feet in less than two hours {and on the most terrifyingly rollercoaster-y stretch of road any of us had ever seen}. we made it to the mauna kea visitors center, as high as you can go on the highest volcano in hawaii {without four-wheel drive or a tour guide}. we ate microwave soup for dinner and watched the sun set from above the clouds. at dusk they brought out giant telescopes and we all got to look at jupiter and its moons, the orion nebula, and saturn's rings. we drank hot cocoa and watched the moon rise, so huge and red and fiery that we honestly thought it was lava, before studying its surface in the telescope as well. the four of us spent a good amount of time just staring up at the star-filled night sky and squealing like little kids at shooting stars, making wishes and wondering how we got so lucky.
